immurok is a wireless fingerprint authentication key designed specifically to address that problem for Mac and Linux users. It provides fingerprint-based local authentication through its own hardware and software architecture while keeping biometric templates stored directly on the device.

The project is especially relevant to developers and technical users because it goes beyond basic screen access. Its planned capabilities cover workflows including sudo authentication, SSH signing, and fingerprint-protected TOTP credentials.

Why should I back this project?

  1. It targets a genuine desktop authentication problem. Macs without built-in Touch ID and many Linux machines still depend heavily on password entry. A dedicated fingerprint device could make frequent local authentication significantly faster.
  2. Fingerprint data stays on the hardware. Biometric templates are stored and matched directly on immurok. The computer receives a cryptographically authenticated successful-match message instead of the underlying fingerprint template.
  3. It is designed for technical workflows. Support for sudo, administrative authentication, SSH signing, and fingerprint-protected TOTP storage makes the device more interesting to developers, system administrators, and power users than a simple fingerprint login accessory.
  4. It works without a cloud account. Pairing uses a direct Bluetooth Low Energy connection, and the system is designed to operate without accounts, cloud services, internet connectivity, or telemetry.

What’s the potential drawbacks you should consider when you back it?

  1. It is not Apple’s Touch ID. Apple does not allow third-party hardware to become part of its closed Touch ID and Secure Enclave architecture. immurok therefore uses separate system mechanisms and software integrations to provide fingerprint authentication.
  2. The target audience is relatively specialized. Users who already have a MacBook with Touch ID and rarely perform administrative or developer operations may see limited practical benefit.
  3. Software integration is crucial. The hardware can only deliver a smooth experience when its macOS and Linux integrations remain reliable across operating-system updates, security changes, and different system configurations.
  4. Crowdfunding introduces delivery risk. Shipping is scheduled to begin in November 2026, but hardware production and fulfillment schedules can change before mass delivery.

The reliability of the project
